Arcanum

Scandinavian all-star team | Oslojazz 2025

Behind the name Arcanum, we find a Nordic super quartet consisting of Arve Henriksen, Trygve Seim, Anders Jormin, and Markku Ounaskari. All four have played a central role in Scandinavian jazz over the past few decades, and they all have a close connection to the ECM label. The band was formed in 2022, although they have previously played together in various configurations, including in the Starflowers quintet of Sinikka Langeland. Now, their debut album as a band is being released on ECM, with Manfred Eicher in the producer’s chair.

In Arcanum, they explore each other's musical backgrounds in free and storytelling improvisations into the unknown, both for the audience and the musicians themselves. On their eponymous album, we find tasteful compositions by Seim and Jormin, as well as an interpretation of Ornette Coleman’s What Reason Could I Give, which showcases the band’s unparalleled interaction and interplay.

Arcanum played an excellent concert at Nattjazz in Bergen in 2024, and now we are greatly looking forward to experiencing the star-studded ensemble at MUNCH, with a freshly released and captivating album in their tour bag.
